Did your zone change?

The 2023 map uses 1991–2020 weather instead of 1976–2005. Compared ZIP by ZIP (40,292 ZIP codes):

42%56%
Colder 1.1%Same zone 41.7%½ zone warmer 55.9%1 zone warmer 1.3%More 0.1%

Part of the change comes from more weather stations and better mapping, not only warmer winters. Every ZIP page shows the old and new zone.

How to use your zone

Choose perennials

Trees, shrubs and perennials labeled “hardy to zone X” survive winters in zone X and colder-numbered zones. Pick plants rated for your zone or lower.

Check frost dates

The zone says nothing about when to plant. Annual vegetables follow the last spring frost and first fall frost, shown on every ZIP page.

Plan the season

The planting calendar turns those dates into windows: when to start tomatoes indoors, when to sow peas, when to plant garlic.

Frequently asked questions

What planting zone am I in?

Type your ZIP code or town in the search box, or tap the map. The zone comes from the 2023 USDA hardiness-zone data (PRISM Group, Oregon State University), based on the coldest night of an average winter in 1991–2020.

What is a planting zone?

A planting zone (USDA plant hardiness zone) is a 10 °F band of the average coldest winter night, split into “a” and “b” halves of 5 °F. It tells you which perennials, shrubs and trees survive your winters.

Did my zone change in 2023?

For 58% of U.S. ZIP codes the 2023 zone differs from the 2012 map; 57% moved to a warmer zone. Every ZIP page shows both.

When is the last frost in my area?

Each ZIP page shows the median last spring frost and first fall frost (32 °F) of the nearest NOAA weather station, from the 1991–2020 climate normals, plus the date after which frost risk drops to 10%.

Is this the official USDA map?

No. The zones come from the official 2023 USDA dataset, but this map is re-colored and re-projected by us. The official map is at planthardiness.ars.usda.gov.

What zone has the most ZIP codes?

Zone 6b — 5,271 of 40,483 ZIP codes.
